While the Kirby franchise has dabbled in 3D games before, Kirby and the Forgotten Land marks a major step for the long-running platformer franchise as the franchise’s first fully 3D entry. Previous games like Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards introduced 3D models in the series’ classic 2D side-scrolling platforming and Kirby Star Allies even allowed players to run around in a 3D overworld before transitioning to more standard 2D platforming. Kirby is set to pick up plenty of new techniques in Forgotten Land and Nintendo recently showed off his brand new Light-Bulb Mouth ability.

The newest clip re-introduces players to Kirby’s Light-Bulb Mouth transformation. The ability sees Kirby’s body morphing into the shape of a giant light-bulb with a comically large mouth that lights up to help Kirby navigate through dark areas. The brief gameplay segment shows Kirby using the light from his mouth to navigate a narrow pathway through a dimly lit environment. Even when the main light is turned off, Kirby continues to glow a dim red giving off a small amount of light around him.
Kirby’s newest abilities have caught the attention of Kirby fans around the world as the release of Forgotten Land sits just over a week away. Courtesy of Forgotten Land’s “Mouthful Mode” allowing Kirby to suck up even larger objects than before, the new game will see Kirby able to transform into a variety of large objects ranging from vending machines and light-bulbs to Kirby eating a car and transforming into a fully operational “Karby.” Players will also be able to upgrade Kirby’s basic Copy abilities throughout the course of Forgotten Land.
While Kirby’s comical new abilities have been the focal point for many of the character’s passionate fans, Forgotten Land is set to introduce a whole host of changes to go along with the new gameplay formula for the upcoming game. Forgotten Land is set to introduce new course objectives to Forgotten Land’s many areas providing players with incentives to discover more secrets hidden in each stage, as well as city-building mechanics for Waddle Dee Town. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is set to introduce bold new ideas to the franchise celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land will release on March 25th for the Switch.
