Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the long awaited next entry in Nintendo and HAL Laboratories’ nearly 30-year-old platforming series and marks the series’ first major entry into 3D. The game centers around Kirby being whisked away to an abandoned world where they must rescue Waddle Dees who have been captured by a group of evil animals. As previously stated, the game is the first truly 3D entry in the franchise, taking cues from the likes of Super Mario 3D World by adapting the game’s traditional 2D level designs to a three-dimensional plain and incorporating and adapting all the usual Kirby mechanics.

The game caught major attention last month when Nintendo revealed “Mouthful Mode,” a new mechanic which allows Kirby to absorb larger objects similar to their usual copy abilities, which include swallowing a car from quicker mobility, and a vending machine to launch items at enemies. A new trailer has revealed that players will also be able to upgrade Kirby’s traditional copy abilities, which includes turning the regular fire-ball ability into a volcano. The game also features a hub world that can be expanded as more Waddle Dees are collected. The latest trailer also confirmed that amiibo are compatible with the game, with Kirby series amiibo specifically netting players the best rewards.

After revealing today’s latest trailer, Nintendo also confirmed that a free demo is available now on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch, allowing players to play the game’s first three levels before the game releases on March 25th. The demo features two difficulty modes, an easier mode aimed towards those new to the series titled ‘Spring-Breeze Mode,’ and a more difficult mode that rewards more Star Coins called ‘Wild Mode.’ The Kirby demo also features the ability to play in co-op, with the second player controlling a Bandana Dee. It’s not yet known if progress from the demo will carry over to the main game.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch on March 25th 2022. The demo is available now on the Nintendo eShop.
