RELATED: Canceled Kirby Games You Never Knew Existed
Kirby’s Dream Buffet combines a lot of different ideas to make it about a race to the finish line. It also incorporates some classic Kirby mechanics into the system such as power-ups and eating a ton of food. It’s fun in small bursts but the game could be a lot better if it added these ideas in a future patch.
7 Make It Free To Play
$15 is not a lot of money to pay for a game like this. However, the play model seems to have been shaped around free-to-play systems. The more players engage with Kirby’s Dream Buffet, the more cosmetics they will earn from hats to skins to color variants. This leveling up system can be fun, but even with that addition, the content is lacking. That’s why even a small fee of $15 can feel like a bit much.
Maybe, with time, it will turn into a more free-to-play model. Kirby’s Dream Buffet should join the already impressive rosterof free-to-play Nintendo games. It’s not out of the relam of possiblities since other Battle Royale games, like Fall Guys, started as a paid game before going free-to-play.
6 Expand The Player Count
Kirby’s Dream Buffet promotes itself as a more family-friendly take on the Battle Royale experience which is true. Players aren’t going to be mercilessly killing their opponents like in Apex Legends.

However, the player count maxes out at four and that is hardly anywhere near a Battle Royale experience to rival the greats. Kirby’s Dream Buffet doesn’t need to add a staggering amount of players to the game. Increasing the count grim four to twenty would be a start although the more the merrier.
5 More Gameplay Modes
The amount of modes is lacking in the game. The core experience consists of players racing through randomly chosen stages. The more food players eat, the heavier they will become. Whoever is the biggest player at the end of the whole battle will be declared the winner. In-between several races are mini-games but these attractions still amount to the same thing: eating.
It would be interesting if Nintendo added more variety to these mini-games or if they added more modes in general that weren’t all about racing and eating. What about a Katamari Damacy-like mode wherein players have to engulf entire regions as they get bigger? This long-running franchise is one of the company’s most versatile brands, so making creative mini-games or modes shouldn’t be too hard.
4 Add A Single-Player Campaign
It seems like Nintendo had one goal with Kirby’s Dream Buffet, create a multiplayer experience that everyone can enjoy. They succeeded on that front, but again, the overall package is lacking in content. Besides extra multiplayer modes and mini-games, Nintendo could also add a single-player campaign to the game
It doesn’t have to be long or include an epic narrative. It could be as simple as Kirby racing spherical versions of famous characters like Meta Knight or King Dedede.
3 Choose Your Courses
There needs to be a stage-select screen in the game. Whether players are tackling the offline modes or hanging out online, the game automatically chooses what stage is coming next. Some multiplayer games, like Call of Duty, ask players in-between matches which map they would like to see next.
A voting system for Kirby’s Dream Buffet would be a step in the right direction for online multiplayer. For offline play, Nintendo should add a direct way for players to select stages and mini-games.
2 More Characters Up Front
Players can play as Kirby in several different colors when they start the game. The more time players invest in Kirby’s Dream Buffet, the more cosmetic items they will unlock. There is a small problem with this model which could be fixed with a patch.

First, more characters from the franchise should be available upfront. This would make the game more enticing as players could potentially select their favorite character other than Kirby. Secondly, what cosmetics players unlock shouldn’t be automatic. They should earn a currency instead that they can then use to unlock what they want in a shop. Either of these features or both would be great to see in the game.
1 Add More Classic Powers
Kirby’s Dream Buffet has a bit of Mario Kart in its DNA besides being a racing game. Players can run through boxes which can either give them food to grow or power-ups. One power-up turns Kirby into a tornado to attack enemies or rival players with while another makes them turn into a rolling donut. These power-ups can be fun but most of them don’t call back to the classic roots of this series.
More power-ups based on classic powers should be added to the game. For example, there is an ability that turns Kirby into a fireball but there could be an ice version as well. Giving Kirby a temporary sword would also be a solid idea.
Kirby’s Dream Buffet was released on August 17, 2022, and is available on Switch.
