“I’d like to apologize to [Baylor football and] Terrell Burt. Last [night] I thought he had faked an injury and I was DEAD WRONG,” he tweeted. “He was trying to fight through an ankle injury he sustained on a previous [kickoff]. He kept playing until finally a teammate forced him to sit down to get him out. I saw what I saw at the time and didn’t realize he had tweaked it earlier. I take full responsibility and apologize sincerely to Terrell.”
To Herbstreit’s credit, the play did initially look like Burt was faking an injury. He was standing perfectly upright until a teammate repeatedly told him to go down, which he did. It was reminiscent of some other fake injuries we’ve seen in the past.
He also appeared in the game a few plays later, which didn’t help his case. Nevertheless, his teammates stuck up for him on Twitter, and Herbstreit apologized.
