While the franchise announced it would allow fans to help name the team, the Knicks have filed several trademarks for five possible names, which include: The New York Plainsmen, the New York Hutch, the New York 914s, the New York Empire, and the New York 'Bockers.

Making it clear that the team made the decision on these names are the fact these trademarks were filed on March 7, which was three days before the team announced that fans could play a part in naming the team.
The Knicks did tell fans that the process had started, however. Their invitation to fans stated: "We have a few ideas, but we want to hear yours as well!"
Fans can still submit names through March 24, after which online voting will open to determine the team name.
