After months of rumors and potential leaks, the first trailer to be shown at Sony’s 2021 event was for the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While BioWare was the original studio to put the series on the map, the remake of KOTOR has been handed off to Aspyr, confirming a longstanding rumor that began circulating back in the Spring. While many people assumed the game was going multiplatform even though it was part of Sony’s event, it seems there’s a big reason why it was featured.

Following the trailer’s debut, Aspyr Media posted a blog from lead producer Ryan Treadwell. Inside the blog, Treadwell provided more information on the game for those who may have missed its original launch back in 2003. However, the biggest reveal in the blog post is that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive at launch. Unfortunately, Treadwell doesn’t provide any additional details as whether this means months, years, or something different.

At the very least, fans regardless of platform will again get to experience one of the most beloved RPGs, now built from the ground up to match the latest technology. Treadwell also went on to confirm that in addition to the new technology, Aspyr has also brought in plenty of industry veterans to work on the remake, including some members of the original Knights of the Old Republic team.

While Aspyr may not be a massive studio name for many fans like BioWare, the studio has extensive experience working with the Star Wars license. They’ve managed to bring plenty of classic games from this IP to modern systems including Star Wars: Episode I – Racer, both Star Wars Jedi Knight titles, as well as Star Wars: Republic Commando. For the KOTOR Remake, Aspyr has been working hand in hand with the newly recreated Lucasfilm Games to ensure that this latest version of BioWare’s beloved RPG hits all of the right notes.
