Despite the franchise’s groundwork of exciting stories, and an expansive galaxy to explore, singleplayer Star Wars games are few and far between. This is a fairly modern issue, but players don’t have many choices when it comes to an original Star Wars game that focuses on a narrative experience in lieu of a multiplayer-driven one; Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order being the only recent exception. This is part of why so much excitement grew around the rumors of a Knights of the Old Republic despite how unlikely it may be. Counting current-gen consoles, the last three console generations have only seen three original singleplayer Star Wars games release.

Knights of the Old Republic Remake Would be a Huge Boon for Fans
Since the era of the PS3 and Xbox 360, only three original singleplayer games have come from the Star Wars franchise: Force Unleashed and its sequel, and Jedi: Fallen Order. There are a handful of other games, mostly on the Wii, that dealt with popular series like Clone Wars, and the often-delightful Lego Star Wars titles. However, many fans were desperate for an original, engaging, and fun Star Wars experience that made use of modern consoles. That’s part of why Fallen Order was so popular; for the same reason, missing out on the KOTOR remake would be rough for fans.
This isn’t to say that the other games don’t have their own merits. The story mode included in Battlefront 2 has been largely lauded by fans and has even found its way into other media like with Bill Burr’s character in The Mandalorian. It’s just that KOTOR holds such a special place in the hearts of fans who played the original. And a full remake of KOTOR of the same caliber as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was a similarly ambitious project, could be a great way to bring in brand new fans that may have missed out. The original released nearly two decades ago so many Star Wars fans may have not even been alive yet.
Video game fans live in a somewhat hard to parse time full of leaks and rumors that can be hard to discern from the truth. The leaks around a Knights of the Old Republic remake have seemed fairly credibly so far, but without any official announcement, anything is possible. Such a huge property like KOTOR is definitely worthy of a remake; However, the double-edged sword of KOTOR’s classic status is that, while fans are going to be excited about a remake, it will also be held to extreme scrutiny. That being said, hopefully fans will learn soon whether their hopes about the project are unfounded are not. Leaving fans in the dark one way or the other would be a bad move.
A Knights of the Old Republic remake is rumored to be in development.
