His achievements have been recognised in the 2017 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, the editor of which Lawrence Booth describes Kohli as having enjoyed “the year of his dreams”.
Kohli’s numbers make for scarcely believable reading - during 2016 he averaged 75 in Tests, 92 in one-day internationals and 106 in Twenty20s.
He becomes the third Indian to be bestowed with the honour, which began in 2003, following in the footsteps of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar.
The women’s equivalent was won by Australia’s Ellyse Perry, while Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year are Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Chris Woakes, Ben Duckett and Toby Roland-Jones.
A shoulder injury forced Kohli to miss India’s series-clinching Test win over Australia in Dharamsala late last month, with the batsman set to miss the start of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL campaign because of the problem.
