The highly unpredictable India-West Indies ODI series is nearing its end, and the highly anticipated tour of Australia follows next. For fans, however, even on non-match days, there’s loads to catch up on the cricketing front with updates from around the world.
Here are some of the headlines from the world of cricket:
Kohli and team demand bananas and rail coaches
The Indian team management, including captain Virat Kohli, has reportedly laid down a unique set of requests ahead of the 2019 World Cup, a list that includes bananas, train coaches and the presence of wives.
It has been reported that, post the England tour, Kohli’s team has put forward some preferences in the review meeting with the CoA ahead of the second Test against the West Indies. The meeting was also attended by Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri and MSK Prasad.
A source was quoted as saying to The Indian Express: “Apparently, the England cricket board failed to serve the Indian team with the fruit of their choice during the tour. But the CoA was amused by the request and said that the players should have told the team manager to buy bananas on the BCCI’s expenses".
Apart from the choice of fruit, the side has also requested to discuss the permission for wives to accompany the players to tours, as well as booking a separate rail coach for travel.
“There were other demands about booking hotels with a proper gym and discussions about the duration and protocol regarding wives accompanying players on tours.”
Khaleel Ahmed reprimanded for aggressive behaviour
Team India pacer Khaleel Ahmed, who is slowly finding his feet in international cricket, got a taste of the other side of the law when he was issued a warning by ICC match official Chris Broad for breaching Level 1 of the Code of Conduct during the 4th ODI against the West Indies.
The 20-year-old, who was earlier part of the U-19 setup, was given an official warning, and received one demerit point for his aggressive reaction towards Windies batsman Marlon Samuels, who he dismissed for 18 runs in his side’s 224-run win.
The incident was reported by on-field umpires Ian Gould and Anil Chaudhary, and the player was identified to have breached Article 2.5 of the Code: “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.
Ganguly writes to BCCI
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has written to BCCI Acting President CK Khanna, Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry over Committee of Administrators (CoA) about the sexual harassment allegations against BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.
In his mail, (a screenshot of which was posted on Twitter by ANI), Ganguly, the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, stated that he was writing with ‘a deep sense of fear as to where Indian cricket administration is going’.
While he was quick to note that he doesn’t know how far the allegations are true, he said he was worried as to how the CoA, comprising former CAG Vinod Rai and former woman cricketer Diana Edulji is divided over the matter and the course to be taken.
Shakib’s NOC pending medical report
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be given a No Objection Certificate to play the UAE T20x if he is cleared of any medical issues.
Shakib, who missed the Asia Cup finals in September due to a long-standing finger injury, was ruled out for three months after the damage in his finger spread to his left wrist.
He has, however, applied for a NOC for the UAE league that is slated to be held in December.
‘‘There will be a medical report regarding Shakib. If there is no problem in it, and it seems to be positive, we will give him the NOC,’’ BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan told reporters, according to Cricbuzz.
‘‘Probably he cannot have an operation in one year time, while at present there is no pain (in his finger) If he is medically fit, he can play,’’ he added.
