Thanks to a 204 run partnership between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the sixth wicket while chasing 463, the Indian side almost made an astonishing comeback, however, they were stopped by Adil Rashid. In the end, it was quite an easy victory for the English side.
Apart from the England-India Test series, not much has been going on in the world of cricket over the past few days. The Asia Cup is set to begin on September 15 in Dubai and UAE, with the first match taking place between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The Australian cricket team announced their Test squad to take on Pakistan a few days ago and some of the decisions made by the team management have come under the scanner.
Let’s take a look at what’s been trending in the world of cricket today:
#5 Virat Kohli snaps at Journalist after Oval loss
As mentioned above, the Indian cricket team ended their series on a disappointing note, losing the Oval Test by 118 runs.
At the post-match press conference, Kohli snapped at a journalist after he was asked about whether this was the best Indian side in the past 15 years.
“We have to believe we are the best side - why not”.
Here’s how the conversation went further:
Journalist: “But is this the best Indian side in the last 15 years?”
Kohli: “What do you think?”
Journalist: “I am not sure”
Kohli: “You are not sure? That’s your opinion, thank you”.
The question was probably raised by the journalist after Ravi Shastri had spoken about the same a few days ago, saying that no other Indian side had played as well as this current side over the past 15-20 years.
#4 Ponting, Lehmann blast selectors over Maxwell snub
As Australia announced their Test squad to take on Pakistan, Glenn Maxwell was left out of the squad. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting found the decision quite baffling, given the fact that the swashbuckling right-hander was not taken to India for the A series as well.
“If I was Maxi I’d be thinking, ‘why didn’t you give me the chance to actually go there (to India) and push my case to get myself into the team?” he told cricket.com.au.
“That’s all a bit bizarre to me. If I was Maxi and I hadn’t been given the chance to play for Australia A, I’d be ropeable.”
Darren Lehmann too felt that it was a mistake to leave Maxwell out.
“It was a tough one with Glenn, he made a ton the last time they toured India and he made a lot of runs in the Sheffield Shield. He plays spin quite well and it was an interesting decision,” he said.
#3 Latest ICC rankings announced
Despite the loss in the Test series, India continued to stay on top of the ICC Test rankings as the number one side in the world.
England, however, climbed up to number four on the list.
Virat Kohli, who scored 593 runs in the entire series, continues to stay on top of the ICC rankings for Test batsmen whereas James Anderson, who recently surpassed Glenn McGrath as the leading wicket-taker in Tests amongst fast bowlers, is on top of the bowlers rankings.
#2 Reports: Ajinkya Rahane could play the Vijay Hazare Trophy
After a decent outing with the bat in the recently concluded Test series against England, Ajinkya Rahane could be on his way to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy - India’s premier domestic ODI tournament.
“The selectors, led by former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, will pick the team on Wednesday,” The Times of India quoted a source as saying on Wednesday.
“Besides recovering form, Rahane would have another reason to play in this tournament despite having just taken part in a gruelling series — a few runs here may just help him stay in fray for a spot in India’s team for the World Cup in England next year,” the source was further quoted as saying.
#1 Chahal gives batting tips to Rohit Sharma
In a video posted by Rohit Sharma on social media platform Instagram, Yuzvendra Chahal was trying to be quirky as he handed out a few tips to the stand-in captain regarding his batting.
Rohit posted a video of him batting in the nets and was seen defending the ball.
In response, Yuzvendra Chahal posted the following in comments: “Defence nahi karne ka bhau udane ka hai @rohitsharma45 bhaiya.”
A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45) on Sep 11, 2018 at 8:58am PDT
Basically, Chahal wanted Rohit to go hard and smash the ball out of the park.
India’s first Asia Cup match will take place on September 18 against Hong Kong.
