News has been relatively quiet concerning the studio, as the last we heard they were hiring developers for a next-gen Metal Gear title. We knew that Metal Gear Solid Rising was getting delayed, but that hardly seems enough of a reason for Kojima to voice such clear displeasure at events seemingly out of his control.
Kojima took to his English and Japanese Twitter accounts to inform his followers that his normally enthusiastic demeanor had been soured by someone or something, and rendered the past year of work by either he or his studio as useless.
Here is the tweeted message, as translated by CVG:
Speculation is sure to follow such a message, but for the moment, there’s no reason to think that this message means that any Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders, or any other Kojima Productions title has been cancelled. That’s certainly the tone of the message, but if it’s referring to one of the major titles we’ll likely hear about it sooner rather than later.
Hideo Kojima had previously voiced his excitement over the Nintendo 3DS’s technology, and since it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Metal Gear 3D, this stands a better chance of being the culprit. Either way, we have suspicions that Kojima’s comments may be more connected to Nintendo’s Wii 2.
Having a year’s worth of development for a Wii 2 title seems unlikely to be scrapped, but if a game were in development for a specific platform - say, the Wii or 3DS - only to be scrapped so that a Wii 2 game could be fast-tracked instead, then the word “meaningless” would be far more applicable than ‘canceled.’
But waiting until only a week before the platform was unveiled at E3 seems especially heinous, even if Japanese developers have gotten the reputation for being somewhat restricted where creativity is concerned. Only time will tell, but if someone as passionate about games as Kojima is this upset about a decision, it’s a good bet that plenty of fans will soon be disappointed as well.
What are your suspicions? Do you think it’s a simply project being canceled, or something more connected to a hardware development? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Whenever some more light is shed on the situation, we’ll keep you updated.
