Knowing how patient the Cardinals can be with young players, Ellis' signing presented a legitimate roadblock in the minds of early drafters. And it showed in draft results, specifically in the SN Expert's League where he was the 319th pick and selected after Dan Uggla (279) and D.J. LeMahieu (308).
It appears Wong's path is blocked no more though, as the youngster beat out Ellis to earn the starting second base job for the red birds.
Ellis missed time this spring thanks to a knee ailment, but Wong's .375-2-8 spring line means that he didn't win the job by default.
Wong was only 9-for-59 (.153) in his first taste of big league action in 2013, but his career .301/.365/.446 minor league line suggests that he'll be capable of much more once he gets more comfortable in the majors.
While Wong's value certainly takes a considerable jump, fantasy owners shouldn't go crazy. He probably won't be a star right out of the gate, but could probably provide a .270-.280 average, approach double-digit homers and score a decent amount of runs depending on where he settles into the lineup.
